What We Do

The Kiwanis Mission & Vision

Kiwanis empowers communities to improve the world by making lasting differences in the lives of children. Kiwanis strives to be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive. Our Kiwanis club fulfills the Kiwanis mission by serving our community through community service projects.

Kiwanis Service

Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it’s located. Members stage approximately 150,000 service projects and raise nearly US$100 million every year for communities, families, free events and projects. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone.

Our Kiwanis club focuses on improving the world by serving children, one child in our community at a time. To reach more people and have a greater service impact on their communities, many clubs sponsor a Kiwanis family club — K-Kids for primary school children; Builders Clubs for adolescents; Key Clubs for teens; Circle K clubs for university students and Aktion Clubs for adults living with disabilities.

Some of our projects include:

  • Distribute school supplies
  • Display and maintain USA and holiday flags along the main street in our community
  • Co-Sponsor Sheraden Scares for Halloween
  • Co-Sponsor Sheraden Shines Night
  • Co-sponsor our annual Sheraden community picnic
  • Participate in our community cleanups and Garbage Derby
  • Sponsor the Annual Easter Egg Hune
  • Support Allegheny West Meals on Wheels Program
  • Sponsor Kids Day: Health Fun and Safety Fair
  • Sponsor a Books for Babies Program
  • Sponsor K Family Clubs: Community Connections Aktion Club, Builders Clubs at Langley PreK-8 School and Pittsburgh Classical Academy and Circle K at Carnegie Mellon University
  • Erected the welcome to Sheraden Portal Signs
  • Plant and maintain the flower bed at the Sam Palombini Garden
  • Collect Children’s books and recycle them at our events to promote children’s Literacy
  • Revitalized the War Memorial in Sheraden with a new garden, sidewalk and planters
  • Collect nonperishable food items in November for our local food pantry
  • Fill weekly “Blessings in a Back Pack” food bags for students in need
  • Partner with the Crafton-Ingram Rotary Club in a few projects: including feeding the first responders on 9-11 in our City of Pittsburgh District 2, Mardi Gras at a senior high rise, Rib & Chicken Fest

Kiwanis Builders Club Sponsor

Our club sponsors 2 Builders clubs: one at Langley PreK-8 School and one at Pittsburgh Classical Academy. Our Builders Club members are all part of the students with disabilities programs at the schools. Each week we provide a service project that benefits the Allegheny West Meals on Wheels Clients or the residents of the Aspinwall VA residents. They are focused and eager to serve and practice team building skills as they work.  Each  week one of our members provides a  small snack as a reward for their cooperation, focus and diligence in getting the project completed.

Kiwanis Circle K Club Sponsor

Although we sponsor the Circle K Club at Carnegie Mellon University, they are a very independent group and provide service to many community groups: Light of Life Mission, Community Food Banks (packing food boxes), making dog and cats toys for local animal shelters, making worry dolls for distribution and writing and mailing get well cards to shut ins. At the end of the school year our club provides graduates with Kiwanis Circle K medallions to wear at their commencement ceremony.
